 OnePlus 3 is not fully utilising the 6GB RAM on board, reveals company co-founder Carl Pei.
 
OnePlus 3 is not fully utilising the 6GB RAM on board, and instead the company has gone for a different RAM management to boost battery life, and overall user experience. OnePlus cofounder Carl Pei revealed this on Twitter, in reply to a video which compared OnePlus 3 and Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.
The video by C4Tech did a speedtest between OnePlus 3 with S7 edge, and showcased how Samsung’s flagship was managing the RAM much better than OnePlus 3.
Pei then replied to a Twitter comment thread on the video saying they have a different RAM management strategy which improves battery life, and have also “built camera and several other modules to benefit from 6GB RAM.”

Pei also tweeted since “6GB RAM is new to Android, there’s still lots to explore,” and their team is optimising the OnePlus 3 for further enhancements.
He also pointed out OnePlus 3’s RAM management can be adjusted by third-party ROMs as they have made the kernel source code files available to developers on Github. The Github files are available here.
OnePlus 3 is one of the first smartphones in India to be selling with 6GB RAM. The Le Max 2 is another smartphone which offers 6GB RAM coupled with Snapdragon 820 and is priced at Rs 29,999 in India. It will go on sale on June 28.
Asus recently launched the Zenfone 3 Deluxe which also has 6GB RAM, and the smartphone is expected to launch in India during August-September time frame.
As we noted in our review, OnePlus 3 is for now, the only one among flagships offering 6GB RAM, and is able to handle all regular tasks that a user would do quite well, including heavy-duty gaming, and the camera is what really stands out.
But as Carl Pei’s replies on Twitter show, OnePlus is still figuring how to best optimise this 6GB RAM, which is in some ways the USP of the smartphone.
